ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS is scenographer and theatremaker Chris GYLEE and writer and project maker Richard ASLAN. Our projects begin with a strong connection to someone who looks at the world in a way we are not used to. Our work takes as its raw material components of performance, live-art, theatre, documentation, installation, event making, curating, bookwork and choreography, with each project feeding on the world around us according to its need and energy. The result is a series of interlocking performative machines and laboratories that enable the enactment of scores and rituals. These charged spaces are animate environments that encourage surprising thought patterns to arise. We see our artistic endeavour as an ongoing investigation into the implications of kindness, bravery, empathy, queerness, and the opposites of war, capitalism and patriarchy.
